Having played, and continuing to play, a foundational role in European integration, the interpretation of EU law is the process through which Union law develops as an evolving legal order. This book formulates a principled model for interpreting the acquis, grounded in continuity, predictability, stability, persuasiveness, legitimacy, and the nomophylactic function of the ECJ, with the aim of explaining both the creative construction of the acquis and the limits of judicial interpretation. The study conceptualises EU law interpretation as a three-stage process: formalist-textual analysis; the golden argument, combining purposive and structural reasoning; and Hermeneia, an Aristotelian concept that operates as a limiting principle of judicial construction by guiding interpretation from explicature to implicature. Hermeneia is conceived as a strictly conditioned interpretative technique that delineates the intrinsic limits of the ECJ's potestas interpretandi. Adopting an inductive, bottom-up methodology, the book develops a doctrinal scheme that is explanatory, methodologically grounded, and practically applicable.
